Sheikh Hasina was described by many as the ‘Iron Lady’ for the past century. Many could not have imagined that a prime minister who had been in power for 15 and a half years would resign and flee the country like this. No person in the history of Bangladesh was forced to leave the country like this after being ousted from power. This is an unprecedented event in the history of Bangladesh. Such an incident has never happened on the soil of Bangladesh before. The people of Bangladesh have not witnessed this kind of incident till now.
Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana were forced to walk during the ‘Long March to’ Dhaka program called by anti-discrimination students on Monday. Before this incident happened, there were many dramas from Sunday night and Monday morning. The most dramatic incident happened at the residence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Around 100 people were killed in clashes between protesters and Awami League and Chhatra League leaders across the country on Sunday. Several policemen were also killed. Many policemen were injured.

That afternoon some senior Awami League leaders and advisors told Sheikh Hasina that the situation had gone out of control. Awami League leaders retreated in various places in the face of protestors’ resistance. The ruling party has reached the brink of defeat.
But Sheikh Hasina was unwilling to accept the situation. He thought that the situation could be brought under control by force. But senior security forces have given him the impression that it can no longer be handled. He did not only talk about the use of force, there he talked about the use of additional force to all the forces of Bangladesh.
After that, he did not reach any kind of mind to resign. Finally, he was forced to resign by the efforts of three army chiefs, but Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy said otherwise.
As Sajeeb Wazed Joy told the media.
Then he mentally prepared to resign. Sajib Wazed Joy, Sheikh Hasina’s son, told the BBC that his mother had been thinking of resigning since Sunday.
The common people cheered around the field-level soldiers at the news of Sheikh Hasina’s escape.
A senior military officer, who did not want to be named, told BBC Bangla that only the Special Security Force, the Presidential Guard Regiment and some senior military officers at the army headquarters knew when Sheikh Hasina signed the resignation letter and boarded the helicopter. The whole thing was done quite secretly.
BBC has learned from army sources that Sheikh Hasina left Ganobhaban by 11 o’clock on Monday. From there he reached Agartala in Tripura by helicopter from Bangladesh. After that, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana reached Delhi by a special plane of the Indian Air Force.
BBC Bangla has learned from talking to officials that Sheikh Hasina wants to keep ‘two options’ open to her. There were also preparations to leave the country and Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wanted to stay in power by using force until the last moment.
But army officials did not want more casualties. On Sunday, common people and protesters mingled with field-level soldiers and officers of the army in different parts of the country. After reviewing the situation, the senior officers of the army realized that the situation had gone beyond the control of the rulers. It is not possible to hold on to power even if we want to, so it is our wish that Sheikh Hasina resigns and flees the country as soon as possible.
Protesters at various places destroyed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s sculpture.
Since Monday morning, all the roads leading to Ganobhaban have been occupied by police and army from far away. According to senior army officials, this arrangement was put in place so that Sheikh Hasina could enter the Tejgaon airport safely.
On the other hand, around nine in the morning, internet connection was stopped in the country for about one and a half hours. This arrangement was made so that no news about Sheikh Hasina’s movements would spread on social media.
Internet connection was activated after Sheikh Hasina boarded the helicopter. Daily Prothom Alo says that Sheikh Hasina held a meeting together with the chiefs of the three forces and the chief of police at the Ganobhaban in the morning.
Prothom Alo wrote in a report that Sheikh Hasina expressed her anger as to why the security forces were not able to handle the situation.
“At one stage, Sheikh Hasina showed the IGP and said, they (police) are doing well. Then the IGP said that the situation has reached such a level that the police can’t maintain such a strict position for a long time,” wrote Daily Prothom Alo.
By then, hundreds of thousands of protesters had gathered in the streets. A senior military official told BBC Bangla that Sheikh Hasina was informed that the people could not be detained for long and that they would head towards the Ganobhaban. In that case, Sheikh Hasina’s life may be in danger.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, the protesters took over the Prime Minister’s office
Sheikh Hasina thought that if the ‘Long March to Dhaka’ program could be stopped by force, then she would not resign. He was also prepared to leave the country if he failed. Officials said India had already been approached about leaving the country.
It was informed by India that if he can reach Agartala in India by helicopter from Bangladesh, then he will be taken to Delhi from there.
Sheikh Hasina was taken to Delhi’s Hindon Airport on Monday in a transport plane of the Bangladesh Air Force.
Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy told the BBC that his mother did not want to leave the country. But family members were worried about his safety. That is why the family members insisted that he should go to a safe shelter.
Daily Prothom Alo wrote that on Monday morning, police and military chiefs held talks with Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana to persuade her to step down.
“Then the officials discussed with Sheikh Rehana in another room. She asked him to explain the situation to Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Rehana then discussed this with their elder sister Sheikh Hasina. But he is determined to hold on to power. At one point, a top official also spoke to Sajeeb Wazed Joy who was abroad. Then Joy talks to her mother. Then Sheikh Hasina agreed to resign,” Daily Prothom Alo wrote.
However, in the end, I want to tell you that Sheikh Hasina’s government made every effort to retain power in Bangladesh until the very end, but all efforts failed and she was forced to accept defeat and immediately resigned and fled the country.
